   Our laboratory investigates the pathophysiology of hearing loss and auditory processing disorders (APDs). We focus on the neuroplastic changes associated with these conditions, both within the auditory system and in non-auditory brain regions, including the hippocampus.

Central auditory processing plays a critical role in hearing recovery following cochlear implantation. However, some individuals with long-standing hearing loss derive limited benefit from hearing aids or cochlear implants, which may ultimately lead to discontinuation of device use. Degenerative changes and maladaptive plasticity in the central auditory system are thought to contribute to these poor rehabilitation outcomes.

To improve auditory rehabilitation outcomes, we seek to identify the molecular mechanisms that regulate neural plasticity. A major focus of our research is perineuronal nets (PNNs), specialized extracellular matrix structures that surround neurons. We have observed alterations in these structures and are investigating how they are regulated following hearing loss. We have also identified molecular changes that emerge shortly after the onset of hearing loss in both the auditory system and other brain regions, including the hippocampus, and are exploring the mechanisms underlying these early responses.

Through this work, we aim to identify the neural regions in which plasticity is altered following hearing loss and contribute to the development of therapeutic strategies that promote adaptive auditory plasticity. Our ultimate goal is to support the recovery of auditory perception and cognition in individuals with hearing loss.

난청 (Hearing Loss)

Hearing loss is more than a reduction in auditory function; it can contribute to cognitive decline and diminished quality of life. Prolonged auditory deprivation can induce structural and functional changes in the central nervous system, thereby limiting the effectiveness of auditory rehabilitation.

We use diverse animal models and molecular biology approaches to characterize the central effects of hearing loss and elucidate the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

The ability to accurately perceive and interpret auditory information depends on sophisticated processing within the central nervous system. Auditory processing disorders (APDs) are characterized by difficulty understanding sound despite intact peripheral hearing and may involve alterations in central auditory pathways and maladaptive neural plasticity.

We investigate central nervous system responsiveness and reorganization in response to auditory stimulation to elucidate the mechanisms underlying cognitive impairment and emotional disorders that may accompany hearing loss, as well as the mechanisms that support recovery.

융합연구 (Convergent Research)

Elucidating the complex pathophysiology of auditory disorders and developing effective treatments require the integration of multiple disciplines.

Our laboratory pursues interdisciplinary research that brings together neuroscience, molecular biology, and medical informatics. Through this work, we aim to identify novel mechanisms underlying hearing loss and limited responses to auditory rehabilitation, and to define potential therapeutic targets.
